This course is designed for flight crew requiring initial Multi-Engine Aeroplane (MEA) Instrument Rating (IR) training. Upon completion of this course the student will have the necessary knowledge and skills to demonstrate that they are competent in the operation of MEA under instrument flight rules (IFR). Completion of this course will satisfy the requirements for an initial issue of an IR-MEA, renewal and recency requirements.

Pre-course study element
3 week program, including:
- 3 Ground School theory days
- 10 Flight Simulator (AATD) sessions
- 9 in aircraft flight sessions
- 1 in aircraft flight session for assessment
Pilots will be training using our onsite FRASCA Seminole Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD). Aircraft sessions will be conducted in our Piper PA-44 Seminole at Flight Options Sunshine Coast.
Ground School theory includes:
- General operational knowledge
- Meteorology
- Operational planning requirements
- Ground and space-based navigation systems & infrastructure
- Performance based navigation (PBN)
- Reduced Vertical Separation Minima
- Human factors
- Practice exams
- CASA Exam
Flight Training includes:
- Instrument flight full & partial panel
- IFR Departure/Arrivals
- Navigation with ground-based aids
- Navigation with GNSS
- Azimuth operations
- Holding patterns
- Instrument approach procedures
- Night operations
- Emergency/Abnormal procedures
- Pre-Licence Flight test
- Initial Instrument Rating MEA Flight Test
Pilots with a CPL may credit their instrument time and reduce the hours required for the course.
To be eligible to commence the Multi-Engine Aeroplane Instrument Rating, you must hold at least:
- 50 hours cross country flight time as PIC
- 2.0 hours of night flight time of circuits, including 1.0 hour of night solo circuits in an aircraft
- CASR Part 61 Flight Crew Licence PPL, CPL or a certificate of validation of equivalent overseas flight crew licence (including ATPL)
- Current Civil Aviation Medical Certificate
